Do I need to declare my heart condition for holiday insurance?
Whether your heart condition involves angina, atrial fibrillation or other cardiac complaints including after a heart attack, it’s best to be properly covered, and that means letting us know fully about these and any other health conditions.
If you have a medical condition – even if you don’t think it’s that important – and you don’t include it in your policy, then it may mean any claims won’t be accepted.
When you give us the right information, you can rest assured that you’re covered.
That means you can get on with the fun stuff like thinking about where you’re going to visit, what you’re going to see, what food you’re going to try (and where you put those flip-flops).
Of course, we all hope there won’t be a need to make a claim on insurance, but it’s more common than you might think. For instance, 1 in 20 people made claims on their Annual Travel Insurance in 2017*.
The good news is: if you do need to claim, we’re right on hand to help.
With proper cover for your heart condition, you also get peace of mind. So isn’t it worth doing right?
What heart conditions can I be covered for with my travel insurance?
Common heart conditions we cover include:
• Atrial Fibrillation
• Blocked artery
• High cholesterol
• High blood pressure
• Heart attack
• Heart bypass
• Heart disease
If you have a heart condition that isn’t listed, don’t worry, we may still be able to cover you. We consider all conditions on a case by case basis.
Will a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) cover my heart condition?
If you’re taking a trip to or a holiday in most parts of Europe, having an EHIC is a condition of our insurance.
An EHIC means you’ll be able to get subsidised or free healthcare in most European countries when using their state healthcare provider (like our NHS). It’s a reciprocal agreement covering all EEA countries (that’s all EU members plus Iceland, Norway, Lichtenstein and Switzerland).
Please note: not everywhere in Europe is in the EEA, and a few places within the EEA, such Monaco and Jersey, do not accept EHIC. So you’ll want to check carefully beforehand that your holiday destination is covered.
If you use your EHIC and you’ve still had to pay a subsidised fee for healthcare, we’ll remove the excess fee for medical emergency claims.
But you should be aware: an EHIC does not cover you for non-medical issues that can go wrong. It cannot help you with costs if you have to cancel your holiday, or if you have to pay for medical transportation home. So while you should definitely take it along with you, an EHIC is no substitute for good travel insurance.
Getting travel insurance for a heart condition when you have other pre-existing medical conditions
We like to do things the right way.
So when we’re tailoring your quote to include your particular heart condition, we’ll ask you a few questions about these and any other pre-existing medical conditions you have. We call this a medical screen.
This process helps make sure that we treat everybody fairly and equally. It’s thorough but it doesn’t take very long. We’ll go through what’s involved in the medical screen for heart conditions below.
Whatever your condition, it’s worth telling us about it. If you have a condition but can’t see it listed on our pages, please just ask us – we do cover the vast majority of health conditions. Call us about this or any other aspect of your travel policy on 0800 033 4902.
What questions will be in the medical screen?
When you apply to us for insurance, we’ll ask you a few questions about your heart condition and other medical conditions.
There’s no need to worry, but we do need you to answer these questions fully and to the best of your knowledge. Giving a false answer could mean your policy is not valid, so you might want to have the answers to hand before you start.
There are many kinds of heart conditions, but here are some common questions we might ask:
• Have you ever been a smoker?
• Have you been advised to take medication for high blood pressure?
• How has your condition been treated?
• When did your symptoms start?
• How short of breath do you get when you are walking on the flat?
Once you’re ready, you can either start your quote online, or talk to us on 0800 033 4902.
Types of travel insurance policies we offer
We offer two types of policy to suit you and your family’s travel plans:
Single Trip Travel Insurance is just the ticket for a one-off holiday. From UK breaks to worldwide tours, our Single Trip policy has you covered. Your cover stops once your holiday is completed. You can add in as many destinations as you want within the trip, and your cover can last for up to 104 days.
Annual Travel Insurance is probably a better choice for you if you’re planning on taking more than one holiday within a year – it can cover all of your trips in that time. And it could save you up to £79** compared to buying a single policy for each trip you take. If you’re under 70, you can stay for up to 50 days in any one trip, up to a total of 183 days.
Whatever your travel plans, and whatever your medical conditions, all of our policies can be tailored and tweaked to fit you perfectly.
Taking a longer trip?
If the above two policies aren’t long enough to cover your travel plans? No problem – you can choose one of our long stay policies. For under 65s, our Long Stay plan lets you travel for up to 550 days – all you need for a round the world jaunt or a long time stay in a special place!
Here’s a simple comparison between our two levels of cover – available on both Single Trip and Annual Travel Insurance policies.
What does our travel insurance cover?
For a more detailed look at the level of cover we offer, take a look at our policy documents. And if you have any questions about what’s covered, please just call us on 0800 033 4902.
Be properly covered with a tailored policy
Of course we always try to offer a competitive price for our customers. But what’s even more important is being sure that you can trust that we will be here to help when you need us.
If basic level insurance will do you nicely, then that’s fine. But what if you need something extra? If that’s the case, you may want to think about tailoring your plan to increase your cover where it’s needed.
Or, for full peace of mind, you may choose our comprehensive level insurance. In most cases, it’s got everything you could need in its breadth and depth of cover.
But if you’re doing something extra-special on holiday? Such as a Caribbean cruise? Or a round or three of golf? No problem. With your comprehensive cover, you can also upgrade to get extra cover for these sort of activities, so all your ‘t’s are crossed and ‘i’s dotted.

Can I make changes to my policy after I’ve bought it?
If something changes before you go on your trip, you’ll need to let us know.
Whether you need to update us about your medical conditions, a change of medication, or adding optional extras after you’ve pre-booked your round of golf, please do speak to us.
If we can help you, we will. It’s always worth doing right.
Please note: while we can increase coverage, what we can’t do is reduce coverage in return for a partial refund. So please do check that you’re happy with the level of cover when you book.
What happens if I need to see a doctor while abroad?
Not to worry. You can call Staysure Assistance, where a team of trained nurses and technical support staff are on call 24 hours a day – so it doesn’t matter which timezone in the world you’re calling from.
We’ll help arrange medical treatment with local doctors, and we’ll also provide translation if you need it. And if you need to, you can reverse the charges when calling us.
