Why do I need travel insurance to cover pre-existing conditions?
Without the right level of cover, if you have a medical emergency while on holiday, you may not be fully covered.
We don’t think it’s worth the risk, especially with some emergency costs abroad being very high.
Even when there is a two-way health agreement, the degree of free healthcare is usually limited. For example an air ambulance from Spain back to the UK can cost more than £10,000 in some instances.
It’s worth having peace of mind, knowing that your pre-existing medical conditions are covered with your travel insurance.
Holiday insurance while on a waiting list for surgery or awaiting test results
Unlike many insurers, we can offer you cover for medical assistance and repatriation claims if you’re awaiting certain types of surgeries.
But it’s important to make sure you declare these when booking your policy*.
Also, while we will be able to provide a more appropriate quote if your pre-existing medical condition has been fully diagnosed and declared, we will still consider you for cover if you are awaiting test results.

Do I need a medical certificate to take out travel insurance?
No, you don’t need a medical certificate to get a policy. But you must not be travelling against the advice of your doctors or consultants.
Although you must be registered with a GP so that we can consult and confirm your case in the event of a claim.
When you apply, you simply need to make a declaration about any pre-existing medical conditions you have. This can be done over the phone or online, depending on how you make your application.
If you have no medical conditions, then you will simply receive a Validation Certificate.
If you, or anyone you are booking travel insurance for has one or more medical conditions, then we will provide you with a Medical Endorsement reflecting this. It is important that you check this is accurate before you begin your period of insurance cover.
What happens if I develop a medical condition after I have bought my policy?
It’s important that you tell us about any changes to your health or medical conditions, even after you have purchased your policy.
These changes may mean an additional premium or a variation of the cover provided is needed.
In some exceptional circumstances it may lead to your cover being withdrawn. Please call our Customer Services team on 0800 033 4902 to notify us of any changes.
What happens if I need treatment abroad?
If you are taken to hospital as an emergency by ambulance or other emergency service, you will need to make sure that you or a travelling companion call us within 48 hours.
For non-urgent medical help – for instance if you need to see a Doctor, or need to go to Accident & Emergency or a clinic – you should call us first. This way we may be able to help you locate the safest and most appropriate source of treatment. We can also help to act as a translator if your medical team don’t speak English.
In either case you may reverse the call charges, or ask to be called back.
We are not able to provide cover if you’re travelling with the intention of getting medical treatment, tests or consultation abroad.
What does it mean if a medical condition is ‘excluded’?
This means that your Staysure policy does not insure you for any claim that relates, either directly or indirectly to the ‘excluded’ medical conditions. However, cover remains in place for any other unrelated insurance claim.
Do I need travel insurance if I have an EHIC?
The NHS recommends that people have both a travel insurance policy and a free European Health Insurance Card (EHIC).
The EHIC entitles you to free or reduced cost medical care within the European Economic Area and Switzerland. We strongly recommend that you apply for an EHIC if you don’t already have one. It could even save you the excess if you make a medical claim with us.
The EHIC should not be considered a replacement for quality travel insurance, as it does not provide any cover for:
- Medical treatment outside the EEA and Switzerland (please note: Turkey is not a current member of the EEA)
- Extra travel and accommodation costs due to illness
- Costs associated with rescue and repatriation
- Lost or stolen property such as passports, baggage or precious items
- Losses from trip cancellation, curtailment and interruption
