Why do I need travel insurance for Europe?
Many of Europe’s most dazzling destinations are just a few hours from your doorstep. But that doesn’t mean that something can’t go wrong on your travels or while you’re away.
In fact it’s not as uncommon as you might think for people to have to make a claim on their holiday insurance. 1 in 20 people made claims on their Annual Travel Insurance in 2017**.
The Government’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office recommends that you buy travel insurance for every trip you take abroad, including any within Europe.
Whether it’s luggage going astray, lost passports, delays, or even medical treatment during your trip, no one wants a trip to be memorable for the wrong reasons.
Staysure can’t prevent the unpredictable. But we can help smooth the bumps if something untoward does happen.

European travel insurance with pre-existing medical conditions
If you have a pre-existing medical condition, we’ll ask you to complete a medical screen so we can assess how we can cover you.
What does a medical screen consist of?
We’ll simply ask you a few questions about any pre-existing medical conditions you have.
To make sure your policy is properly tailored to cover you, it’s important that the answers you give us are full and accurate. You might find it helps to have details of your medical condition to hand during the screening process.
If you have a medical condition that’s not included in your policy, it could end up meaning you are not covered in the event of a claim. So it’s vital we get all the relevant information at this stage, just to be on the safe side.
Common questions we may ask you include:
• How long have you had this medical condition?
• Do you take regular medication for this?
• Have you recently had surgery?
You can answer these questions online or over the phone.
The quote process is thorough but easy to follow and it only takes a few minutes. You can get a quote online now or call us 0800 033 4902.
Don’t forget your EHIC
You’re entitled to free or reduced cost medical care and treatment within the European Economic Area and Switzerland if you carry a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC).
However, the NHS recommends that holidaymakers carry both a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) and a valid travel insurance policy. There are limits to what an EHIC covers, and it’s not a replacement for quality travel insurance.
It’s a condition of our insurance that when you travel to Europe you do take an EHIC.
This means we can waive your travel insurance excess if you need to make a medical claim. (This could amount to £100 per person on a Basic policy and £65 for Comprehensive policies.) You can apply for an EHIC for free here or by calling 0300 330 1350.
Travellers should also be aware that the EHIC is not accepted in the following places:
• The Channel Islands, including Guernsey, Alderney and Sark
• The Isle of Man
• San Marino
• The Vatican
What are my choices of travel policy?
We offer two types of policy to suit you and your family’s travel plans in Europe:
Single Trip Travel Insurance is ideal if you’re going for a one-off holiday or trip. A weekend break in Amsterdam? A couple of weeks in Spain? You’ll be covered with a Single Trip policy. It’s flexible too. You can add in as many destinations as you want within the trip, and your cover can last for up to 104 days. Your cover last until your holiday is over.
Annual Travel Insurance may be a better fit for you if you’re planning on taking more than one holiday within a year. It can cover all of your trips in Europe in that time and even further afield if you choose worldwide cover. It could save you up to £79**** compared to buying a single policy for each trip you take. Also, if you’re under 70, you’ll be able to stay for up to 50 days in any one trip, up to a total of 183 days.
Thinking of an even longer trip?
Still, what if the above policies above still aren’t enough to cover your plans? That’s no problem. If you’re under 65, our long stay plan means you’ll be covered for up to 550 days away for any single trip.
Basic or Comprehensive cover?
Our two main levels of cover are available for both Single Trip and Annual Travel Insurance policies. Here’s how they compare:
What does our travel insurance cover?
And if you fancy doing something extra-special on holiday? Hitting the ski slopes? Cruising the Danube? A swing or two of the golf clubs? Yes you can. With a comprehensive level of cover, you can also upgrade to get extra cover for these kinds of activities.
To get get a more detailed idea of the level and kinds of cover we offer, you can look at our policy documents. If you still have any questions about what’s covered, please do call us on 0800 033 4902.
Can I make changes to my policy even after I’ve bought it?
If something changes before you go on your trip, we’ll you’ll need you to tell us. It’s always worth doing right to save disappointment later.
Whether it’s an update on your medical conditions or medication, or adding optional extras to your holiday, please do speak to us and we’ll do our best to see if we can increase the coverage where necessary.
Please note: while we can increase your policy coverage, we can’t reduce coverage in return for a partial refund. So please do check that you’re happy with the level of cover when you book.
What if I have to make a claim?
If you do need to claim, you simply call the number on your policy and we’ll be right on hand to help.
If it’s an urgent medical matter you can use our medical emergency line. It works 24 hours a day, so it doesn’t matter where in the world you’re calling from.
End supplier failure
In recent years we have seen the collapse of several airlines and travel companies, leaving many holidaymakers out of pocket as their arrangements were not covered by ABTA or ATOL Licences.
It’s not surprising that some customers have told us of their concerns about this.
We listen, and that’s why we now offer an End Supplier Failure add-on to our Comprehensive Travel Insurance policies. This means you’ll have cover of up to £3,000 against the insolvency of travel and hotel companies etc (which do not form part of a package holiday).
